A four-time Mississippi State alumna has been selected as the new director of educational outreach and student programs for the Bagley College of Engineering.
Shana Lee transitions into the role on a full-time basis after having served as the interim director since November 2019. In her new position, she will direct Mississippi BEST Robotics, coordinate Mississippi State’s High School Engineering Day and plan Bagley’s annual summer Engineering Academies.
“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the Bagley College of Engineering’s K-12 outreach efforts,” Lee said. “Supporting creativity and reflection in informal learning environments is the key to a memorable and transferable learning experience.”
Lee joined Bagley’s K-12 Outreach staff in August of 2017 as the director of the Region V Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair. In that role, she directed regional fairs for 16 counties and served as the secretary of the Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair board of directors that plans and coordinates the statewide fair.
“Shana has done an excellent job leading the K-12 outreach office as the interim director and I look forward to continuing to work with her as the permanent director,” said Jason Keith, dean of the Bagley College of Engineering. “Her experience working with the statewide science and engineering fair, her doctorate in education, and her background in teaching will be a tremendous asset not only for the university but also for the schools we work with every day.”
Before coming to Mississippi State, Lee was a teacher and science department coordinator at Heritage Academy in Columbus, Mississippi and was a substitute teacher at the Mississippi School for Math and Science.
Lee earned double bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and secondary education from Mississippi State in 2012 before completing her master’s in secondary education from MSU in 2014. She earned her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Mississippi State in December of 2019.
