Undergraduate students from across Arkansas recently gathered at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) central campus for the annual Undergraduate Pre-Health Conference.
The event provided current college students with a comprehensive introduction to careers in health care and featured representatives from all five UAMS colleges — Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Health Professions — and the UAMS Graduate School.
“I thought the event went really well,” said Ursula Redmond, education coordinator for UAMS Regional Campuses. “Our goal was to give students a broader understanding of the options they have in health care through UAMS. Meeting faculty and current UAMS students offers a snapshot of what students can expect from their professional school journey. Hopefully this experience was helpful for undergraduate students deciding on their next steps.”
Attendees participated in a full day of programming, which included presentations from each college. Representatives shared information about their academic programs, unique offerings and guidance on preparing for careers in health-related fields.
Breakout sessions allowed participants to rotate through smaller, focused discussions on admissions criteria, academic expectations and strategies for success in the application process. These sessions offered students the opportunity for individualized interaction and advice.
The conference featured a student panel comprised of current UAMS students from each of the five colleges and the graduate school. Panelists spoke candidly about their academic journeys, offering personal insights into the challenges and rewards of health professions education. Attendees were also able to meet with representatives from various UAMS student interest groups.
Organized by UAMS Regional Campuses, the goal of the conference was not only to provide information but also to foster connection and encouragement among future health care professionals.
